Advanced Academy

Have you put this on your calendar yet? 3 days of great practical training!

We will be offering the Advanced Academy on May 13-15 of 2026 at Camp Tillikum. Stay tuned for more info.

This OCA Advanced Academy was designed for the First Responder Chaplain needing a break from the front lines and is desiring a “retreat” experience that allows them space to rest, reflect, fellowship with other Chaplains, and focus on soul care and spiritual wellness. The focus of this two and a half day retreat was on “Enhancing Self-Awareness for First Responder Chaplains”.

This training explored and enhanced skills that allow Chaplains to see themselves and others with more clarity and understanding. Through presentation, discussion, group processing, and interactive play, participants practiced skills known to enhance connection with self and others. Chaplains left with a greater understanding of their impact on others and will take away new or improved skills for making better connections with those for whom they serve.

The 2026 OCA Advanced Academy is excited to introduce Chaplain Dr. Trey Doty as one of our retreat presenters, where he will teach and lead discussions on moral injury..

Trey Doty, DMin, is a Chaplain and Employee Support Specialist for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he leads well-being and resilience initiatives for the Portland Division. He also serves as a chaplain for the Oregon State Police and Oregon’s West Coast Post Trauma Retreat and served as an instructor with the Oregon Chaplain Academy™

With more than 30 years of ministry and nonprofit leadership, Dr. Doty has helped develop organizational responses to the systemic and personal trauma experienced by first responders, public health workers, wildland firefighters, and faith communities. His research and teaching focus on integrating theology, psychology, and pastoral care, with particular attention to leadership practices that help organizations address and recover from moral injury.

Dr. Doty facilitates groups focused on healing the effects of institutional betrayal and has helped develop peer support teams equipped to meet the emotional, mental, and spiritual demands of trauma-exposed professions. He also coordinated statewide support for public health employees during the COVID-19 pandemic and for firefighters during and after Oregon’s devastating 2020 wildfire season.

A frequent national speaker, Dr. Doty addresses moral injury, moral resilience, trauma, spirituality, and the cultivation of purpose and trust in challenging environments.

He is a Recorded Pastor in the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends (Quaker) Churches. Dr. Doty earned his Doctor of Ministry from Boston University School of Theology and his Master of Divinity from Portland Seminary at George Fox University.

Besides growing our Self-Awareness, and Understanding, we will have time to read, worship together, take naps and hike the trails at Camp Tilikum. We will also be blessed by rich fellowship around wonderfully prepared meals and evenings visiting around the campfire

Training is targeted to active First Responder Chaplains who have been serving as a Chaplain for 2 years and have completed the OCA Basic Academy or introductory Chaplain training.
